Habitat assessments at EU biogeographical level

The Article 17 web tool provides an access to EU biogeographical and Member States’ assessments of conservation status of the habitat types and species of Community interest compiled as part of the Habitats Directive - Article 17 reporting process. These assessments have been carried out in EU 25 for the period 2001-2006, in EU 27 for the period 2007-2012, in EU 28 for the period 2013-2018 and in EU 27 for the period 2019-2024.

Choose a period, a group, then a habitat type belonging to that group.
Optionally, further refine your query by selecting one of the available biogeographical regions for that habitat type.
Once a selection has been made the conservation status can be visualised in a map view.

The ‘Data sheet info’ includes notes for each regional and overall assessment per habitat.

The 'Audit trail' includes the methods used for the EU biogeographical assessments and justifications for decisions made by the assessors. Some inconsistencies may appear in the data reported by Member States. To ensure the robustness of the EU-level assessments, all assessments undergo expert review. Where inconsistencies or potential errors are identified, they are documented transparently and per habitats in the assessment audit trail.

Note: Rows in italic shows data not taken into account when performing the assessments (marginal presence, occasional, extinct prior HD, information, etc)

The delayed delivery by Spain did not allow the Spanish report to be used for the EU conservation status assessment. Where possible, Spanish data from the period 2013-2019 were used for the EU assessments of 2019-2024. You can see a relevant technical note here.

Numerical information presented in the web tool is rounded to two decimals for easier presentation in the tool. This means that very small numbers are presented as 0. The tool cannot differentiate rounded 0 from reported 0. At the moment all cases are shown as NA, we are working on fixing the issue and show 0 instead of NA where relevant.

If a specific FRR value was reported, this value is used as min, max, and mean.

If FRR is reported as a predefined range, the min, max, and mean are calculated
based on the reported current range.

If the FRR is unknown, the reported current range is used as FRR min, max, and mean.

If a specific FRA value was reported, this value is used as FRA min, max, and mean.

If FRA is reported as a predefined range, the FRA min, max, and mean are calculated
based on the mean current area (best single value or average of min and max).

If the FRA is unknown, the mean current area is used as FRA min, max, and mean.
