->HabCondition: S'il y a plusieurs espèces, qui sont considérées comme caractéristiques des herbiers à Posidonia, il n'existe pas de suivi d'une espèce en particulier qui permette de renseigner sur l'état de santé ou le bon fonctionnement de l'écosystème. Par contre, un indice (EBQI), qui renseigne sur les différents compartiments de l'herbier (à -15 m) par la prise en compte des espèces associées notamment a été mis au point (Personnic et al., 2014). La prise en compte de cet indice montre, en Occitanie et en PACA, un état médiocre sur 17 sites et mauvais sur 8 sites sur les 34 sites suivis dans le cadre de la DCE, en 2015/2016 (Données TEMPO - www.medtrix.fr). Le long du littoral de la Corse, seulement un site est considéré comme médiocre sur les 13 sites suivis dans le cadre de la DCE, en 2017 (Données TEMPO - www.medtrix.fr). Signalement de mortalité totale pour Pinna nobilis à Scandola. ||
->Future: Il est urgent de mettre en place des mesures pour 1/ faire respecter les mesures réglementaires relatives à certaines activités de pêche (Chalutage par exemple), 2/ réduire les destructions engendrées par la pression d'ancrage (en particulier au regard du développement de la grande plaisance). S'il n'est pas possible d'agir directement sur 1/ les dégradations d'herbiers induites par l'augmentation de la hauteur d'eau, 2/ la destruction des monuments naturels (par exemple récifs et atolls de posidonies) ou 3/ la fragmentation des herbiers superficiels du fait des évènements exceptionnels découlant des changements climatiques, il serait par contre nécessaire d'améliorer l'état de conservation de l'ensemble des autres herbiers de façon à ce que les fonctionnalités et les services rendus par cet écosystème soient à minima maintenus. ||

->Range: Posidonia oceanica is abundant in Malta. In view of this, its range is extensive,
mostly present along the northeastern to southeastern coast, due to the gentler
sloping bathymetry. P. oceanica occurs in both patchy and dense meadows in
Maltese coastal waters. Dense meadows are particularly prominent along with
the eastern coastline of Malta, with an area towards the northwest being
particularly important. Posidonia oceanica is widely present along the
northeastern coast of Gozo. The channels between Gozo and Comino, and
Comino and Malta, are very densely covered. ||
->Coverage: The change in area of occupied habitat from the last reporting cycle is mostly due to the use of the actual area of the habitat rather than the number of 1x1 km grid cells in which the presence of the habitat type has been recorded.

A complete survey of the distribution and area of Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Maltese coastal waters was carried out in 2018-2019 as part of streamlined monitoring programme which caters for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Habitats Directive (HD) requirements, on the basis of common elements/parameters and methodologies.

An increase in the actual area was recorded, but this is attributed to improved knowledge. The habitat area trend has otherwise remained stable and the Favourable Reference Area is approximately equal to the current area. ||
->HabCondition: Locally, Posidonia oceanica meadows occur either as continuous meadows or reticulate meadows (seagrass beds intermixed with channels and areas of bare sand or bedrock). Local Posidonia reefs are characterised by a thick layer of matte (at least 1 metre) and healthy Posidonia shoots forming extensive bands over considerable areas of the matte. These meadows are generally in a good state of health. However according to the latest PREI index; assessing the status of P. oceanica as a Biological Quality Element under the WFD, from the 22 stations in the Maltese coastal water bodies, 6 stations were in high ecological status, 11 in good status and 5 in moderate status. This assessment made use of the Ecological Quality Ratios for the High-Good and Good-Moderate boundaries from Commission Decision (EU) 2018/229, intercalibrated for Malta (European Commission, 2018) and was used to determine the habitat condition by working out the average index in each water body, following the WFD Guidance Document No 13 - Overall Approach to the Classification of Ecological Status and Ecological Potential. ||
